Born in Santiago, Chile, Lucia was the eldest of two. At a time when women were expected to fulfill the traditional roles of wife and mother, she broke the mold and became a champion in the male dominated sport of Rayuela. She also scaled the highest peak in Chile. Her spirit of adventure Continues to inspire her family.
Victor and Lucia began as neighbors and fell in love. They left Chile and moved to Puerto Rico where they started a family. Eventually, they moved to Alaska and settled in Carpinteria, California. Their family grew to five children, three son in laws, and 15 grandchildren.
Immigrating to the United States had many challenges including being taken advantage of and not having family nearby to help them. However, the one overriding message they instilled in their children was the importance of pursuing a career through education.
