A Family Foundation

Their Story

Victor Alarcón

Born in Santiago Chile, Victor had a dream to travel to the United States. In Chile, he apprenticed as a tailor, volunteered as a firefighter and drove taxis. His pursuits led him to Puerto Rico, Alaska and finally California. His entrepreneurial spirit sparked many small businesses.

Lucia Gutierrez

Born in Santiago, Chile, Lucia was the eldest of two. At a time when women were expected to fulfill the traditional roles of wife and mother, she broke the mold and became a champion in the male dominated sport of Rayuela. She also scaled the highest peak in Chile. Her spirit of adventure Continues to inspire her family.

Together

Victor and Lucia Alarcón began as neighbors in Santiago, Chile, and later built a life together centered on family, hard work, and opportunity. Their journey took them from Chile to Puerto Rico, then Alaska, before ultimately settling in Carpinteria, California, where they raised five children and grew a family that now includes fifteen grandchildren.

Like many immigrant families, they faced the challenges of starting over in a new country far from home and family support. Through determination and sacrifice, they created new opportunities for their children while emphasizing the importance of education and pursuing meaningful careers.

Victor often reminded his children, “Tienes que seguir adelante” — you have to keep moving forward. That message continues to inspire the mission of the Alarcón Foundation today.

Victor passed away in September 2025, leaving behind a strong example of hard work, family, and the importance of education.
